Production Techniques of Polymer Matrix Composites

Purpose of Education

The main purpose of the training is to explain the principles of the techniques used in the manufacture of thermoplastic and thermoset-based polymeric composites and to exemplify the applications of the parts produced with these techniques in different sectors, especially the automotive industry. In the training to be given for this purpose, the basic components of the composite, thermoset/thermoplastic based matrix materials and the general characteristics of the reinforcements, the reinforcement forms, the manufacturing technique and the selection criteria of the reinforcement form and the process selection criteria will be explained depending on the properties expected from the composite. With the principles explained in this context, it is aimed to inform the participants about composite design, process selection and process control.

Education  target

At the end of this training, all participants;

  • Materials used in the manufacture of composites,

    • Thermoset and thermoplastic resins:
      Thermal behavior of resins, structures,

    • Reinforcers: Continuous filaments, rovings, woven/nonwoven fabrics, fibres, felts, prepregs, preforms, molding compounds, hybrid reinforcers. The relationship between the reinforcement form and the manufacturing technique and composite properties,

  • Manufacturing technique selection criteria, basic steps of manufacturing,

  • Manufacturing techniques of thermoset composites: hand-laying, spraying, filament winding, pultrusion, compression molding, resin transfer molding, injection, roll-wrapping, centrifugal casting, continuous lamination,

  • Manufacturing techniques of thermoplastic composites: Injection, pressure molding, diaphragm forming, hot pressing, pultrusion, strip wrapping, thermoforming of sheets,

  • Machining and joining of composite parts (mechanical and adhesive bonding)

  • Examples of applications of composites in the automotive industry,

  • They will have knowledge about the mechanical principles of fiber reinforcement.
