Corrosion and Corrosion Prevention Training through Real-Life Cases

Purpose of Education

There is a risk of corrosion in any environment where metal and its alloys, which are the basic engineering material, are used. The purpose of this training is to provide the relevant people who have not been trained in corrosion before or who have received very limited training to gain the necessary awareness and knowledge about the basic principles, economic importance and methods of corrosion protection through real examples.

Target of Training

All participants at the end of this training;

  • Will have a clear idea of how and why corrosion occurs,

  • Will have knowledge about thermodynamic and kinetic principles effective on corrosion

  • Will be aware of the economic losses caused by corrosion,

  • Will learn the types of corrosion and the types of damage caused by corrosion,

  • Will be able to learn in atmospheric, subsoil, aqueous environment, concrete the parameters that are effective on corrosion,

  • Will have knowledge about the basic principles of combating corrosion and the applications of these methods,

  • Understand the importance of design in corrosion protection.

Prof. Dr. Ali Fuat ÇAKIR

He was Born in İstanbul, graduated from Galatasaray High School and İstanbul Technical University. He completed his PhD at Columbia University, New York on behalf of İTÜ.  He received Dr. Eng. RS.  degree and worked as an assistant and lecturer at the same institution. Upon his return to the country, he started working at the Faculty of Mining and Metallurgy Department of İTÜ. He became an Associate Professor in 1976 and a Professor in 1982. He was the founder of the Faculty of Metallurgy and the Electrometallurgy and Corrosion department. He served as head of the Metallurgy and Materials Eng. department, dean of the Faculty of Chemical and Metallurgical, senator and member of the interuniversity board of İTÜ. He retired in 2005. He is a consultant in the field of corrosion and Surface Treatment at domestic and abroad.

He did scientific and applied studies in the fields of Corrosion and corrosion protection (cathodic protection, corrosion failure analysis etc.) surface treatment (electrolytic metal coating, PVD coating etc.), hydrometallurgy (Komplex ore leaching, evaluation of zinc carbonate ores etc.) He has publications about 200 in Turkey and abroad, presented papers. He has worked as a director in nearly 50 scientific and industrial projects. He also gave courses at Yıldız Technical University, Marmara University and Sakarya University.  He established laboratories in his department.

He received awards for his publications and patent work. He was one of the founders of the corrosion society.

He is married, has a daughter and a boy.

Prof. Dr. Mustafa ÜRGEN

He graduated from Istanbul Technical University Metallurgical Engineering Department in 1977. After completing his master's and doctoral studies at the same university, he became an assistant professor in the Department of Metallurgy and Materials Engineering at İTÜ in 1991. He became a professor in 1996. He currently works as a faculty member in the same department and leads the Surface Treatments Research Group.

After receiving his bachelor's degree, he spent a year in Postdoctoral Studies at the Max-Planck Institute, Metal Research Department. He was the head of the Department of Metallurgy and Materials Engineering at İTÜ between 2002 and 2005 and the coordinator of the interdisciplinary Materials Science and engineering program supported by DPT in the scope of Advanced Technologies in engineering project between 2002 and 2011. He continues his research in the field of surface treatment science and technologies (corrosion and corrosion protection, electrolytic metal coating, vacuum coating techniques, anodic oxidation, hard coatings and tribology of hard coatings)

He has been working for many years at both academic and industrial service level on corrosion and corrosion protection. He is a member of the Turkish corrosion Society, UCTEA Chamber of Metallurgical and Materials Engineers, AVS, ACS. He represents Turkey at the European Academy of surface treatments (EAST) and the International corrosion Council (ICF). There are over 150 publications published in international and national journals. He has given over 15 speeches as an invited speaker at national and international meetings, organized numerous National and International Congress Symposiums and participated in the organizing boards. He also undertook the duties of conducting and researching in various public and private sector funded projects. He has a total of 7 international patents, three of which are published, four of which are made application.
